Hiring in Colombia: Nearshore Talent for North America

Colombia has moved from an occasional outsourcing destination to a genuine nearshore hub for North American companies, particularly for technology and bilingual customer-facing roles.

Why Colombia

Time zone. Colombia sits on a single time zone with no daylight saving, overlapping almost entirely with US business hours. For work that needs real-time collaboration rather than handoffs, this is the central advantage over Asian alternatives.

Bilingual talent. English proficiency is strong in the professional population, particularly in Medellín and Bogotá, and particularly among younger candidates. Levels vary, so assess rather than assume.

A substantial technology sector. Both Medellín and Bogotá have developed real technology ecosystems, with universities producing engineering graduates and a growing pool of people who have worked for international clients.

Travel proximity. Direct flights from several US cities make in-person visits practical in a way that Asian locations are not.

The employment framework

Colombian employment law is governed by the Código Sustantivo del Trabajo and is generally protective of employees. Points to understand:

Prima de servicios. An additional statutory payment equivalent to roughly a month's salary, paid in two instalments across the year. Mandatory, not discretionary.

Cesantías. A severance savings mechanism — the employer deposits an amount annually into a fund held for the employee, plus interest on it.

Social security contributions cover health, pension, and occupational risk, split between employer and employee.

Parafiscales. Additional payroll contributions to family welfare and training institutions, applicable depending on the employer's situation.

Termination. Dismissal without just cause requires indemnity, calculated on salary and length of service. Just-cause dismissal requires both grounds and process.

The practical consequence is that total employment cost sits meaningfully above base salary — commonly in the region of forty to fifty per cent on top, though the exact figure depends on salary level and circumstances. Budgeting on base salary alone produces a significant underestimate.

Where the talent is

Medellín has become the centre for technology and international business services, helped by a deliberate push into innovation and a large student population. It is also where much of the bilingual talent sits.

Bogotá is the largest market overall, with the deepest pool for finance, corporate, and senior roles.

Cali and Barranquilla have growing service sectors, generally at lower cost and with lower competition.

What catches employers out

Budgeting on base salary. The statutory additions are substantial. A salary that looks like a large saving against US rates narrows considerably once prima, cesantías, and contributions are included. It is usually still a saving — just not the one on the spreadsheet.

Assuming uniform English. Proficiency varies widely by role, city, and individual. Assess it properly during screening rather than taking it from a CV, particularly for voice roles.

Hiring contractors to avoid the employment costs. The misclassification risk is the same as anywhere, and Colombian authorities look at the substance of the relationship rather than its label.

Underestimating termination cost. Indemnity for dismissal without cause is formulaic and can be significant. Factor it into the decision to hire rather than discovering it later.

Nearshore versus offshore

The honest comparison: Colombia generally costs more than South or Southeast Asia and less than the US or Canada. What you buy for the difference is time-zone overlap and travel proximity.

For work that can be handed off asynchronously, that premium may not be worth paying. For work requiring daily collaboration with a US team — engineering, design, account management, anything client-facing in US hours — it frequently is.

Where to start

Be specific about the English requirement and whether the role genuinely needs time-zone overlap. Those two questions determine whether Colombia is the right market or an expensive version of a cheaper option.
